Franco Harris, a professional American football player, was created on March 7, 1950.
He played running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League for 13 seasons (NFL).
Harris was born in Fort Dix, New Jersey. After the war, his mother, Gina Parenti Harris, an Italian native who later became a “war bride,” immigrated to the US along with her husband. At Rancocas Valley Regional High School in Mount Holly Township, New Jersey, Harris finished his high school education in 1968. After that, while a student at Penn State University, he played football for the Nittany Lions.
He was selected for the Pro Bowl nine times, and he helped the Steelers win four Super Bowls. He was a significant contributor to one of professional football’s most well-known plays, the “Immaculate Reception,” which gave the Steelers their first-ever playoff victory.
Harris won the NFL Rookie of the Year award from The Sporting News as well as the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award from the Associated Press in his first season with the Steelers (1972). He carried the ball 188 times for 1,055 yards throughout that season, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. In addition, he scored touchdowns on the ground 10 times and in the air once.
